They did used to run 'reverse rims' to get that deep dish and wide track, but I think there was more to it than just putting the wheels on back to front.

By doing that you upset the wheel offset and put too much load on hubs and studs then you get wheels falling off

Reverse rims were normally made by taking the center out of the standard rim and turning it around so when on the car the wheels had a reater offset . It involves welding the wheels so is dubious about legallity and safety , much better to just buy mags with the right offset or keep your standard rims and use spacered drums to get the wider track . |

Trick always was to use two sets of wheels, you cut off the outside of 1 set and the inside of the other and weld the wider bits back together to get wider rims, the centre is not removed from the rim so as it stays ecentric to the wheel. A great deal of the Original "s" rims bit the dust this way, people using 8 rims to make 4. |

a friend of mine was a police officer in the uk (used to drive coopers as police cars) and would tell me in their spare time put the wheels on reversed, he said they handled great but the aim of the game would be to see how many corners you could take until the wheel broke off

What cmohr has described above is the only legal way to do it here.....take two wheels and make one. That way you aren't mixing and matching grades of steel etc. Perfectly legal if done by the right person (in NZ), cost about $100 a rim which is pretty damn good when you compare it to the price of mags. |
