Not a fan of the 1 litre auto, they just don't give much feeling of motion, but a 1.3 is a beautiful car to get around in. They feel faster than they are cause of the rate they change gears.

unless it has at least a standard 1275 mated up to the auto they are gutless! They are ok for around the city but when on the hwy it takes for ever to get 'em to 100km/h......if they can reach it.

998 auto's are painfully slow, but awesome fun to drive and i prefer it as relaxing cruise car.. But hey...i have a quick mini on the way and a hot 1152 if i feel like some speed 
The Matic is just as fun to drive in it's own way though
I also love the spartan interior - it's like being in the same car 20years back (which it is) and that's what i love about it

Thats right. I know alot of people that think its not the same to drive an auto mini and are quick to pass (usually negative) judgment without driving them. At the end of the day they're still minis and still go round corners.

I have a 1.3 lt Rover Mni, Auto. It goes well, it's fun to drive, especially in traffic, correct it doesn't have the pick up a manual car has, but it still goes well. |

they are nice to drive and good to putt along in.. ihave been driving a 998 one to work for the past two or three weeks and it is great... and you can use the other hand to do something else! a little slow but i think thats the joy in it... |

i love my matic. Other than the occasionaly tear around the backyard (is only a month or so off being rego'd, i think the auto gives it a bit more character). Question and sorry bout hijacking the thread, but how fast would I expect my stock standard mini matic 998cc to go? Slamming it all the way down into D just looks cool too.

According to Modern Motor, August 1965- (reprinted in Mini Minor Down Under) it took 14 secs shifting manually to get from 0-50MPH, (~80KMH) and 15.5 secs in `D' (back then A Cooper S took 7.5 secs). No top speed etc given. I have a Mini Matic- back when it was original it would do about 75MPH flat out with the rubber band wound right up...
You can't do a lot to the 998 for more power with the stock cam, and if you change the cam it'll have even less low speed torque- which will kill acceleation off the line. As others say they go a lot harder with a 1275 auto in, but then legally you need to add disc brakes. But well worth it.
