does anyone know of a good web blog on rebuilding mini gearboxes?

I've never tackled a 'box before, but want to read the real world experiieces and tips to get a better idea of it all. I gather that it is more an art as you can rebuild a good box and you can rebuild a bad one. I'd like to avoid the latter.

AC Dodd did a gearbox feature once in Miniworld or Mini Mag, can't remember which. So did Keith Calver I think.

From memory the Keith Calver gearbox rebuild guide was split over three instalments, I think I have two of them hardcopy at home. or try the "Tech Expert" mag/book he came out with. Let me have a look at home for that too...maybe I can help you out (only cuz ur a fellow expat Sandgroper  )

KCs Mini Expert has a couple of chapters on a full strip down and rebuild of a rod box - plenty of pics and tips http://www.calverst.com/main.htm

Aha! That's the one I was trying to recall the name of in my post earlier. It's a rod change gearbox rebuild. Lots of detailed colour pics so a bit much to scan and email. If someone in your local area has a copy, you want pp 94-113. Failing that if you're keen you can buy a copy from KC's website/ebay UK shop.

KC is a member of this Forum and is a great contributor to the Mini scene and also makes his living from writing articles and selling his work. Suggesting to scan/copy and distribute his copyrighted material is not nice  Buy a copy and help keep the Mini scene viable for all concerned.

I don't reckon I am being over at Point Cook. Might be a few months before I give it a go, probably over the Xmas break (I got 3.5 months off..woooo!!).

I can't go through his articles at the moment, they're being compiled it says...

I noted someone purchased a gearbox rebuild kit from Minispares a while back and asked what else they needed. It seems however that the kits only suit the rod change boxes, and not the 4 synchro remote boxes. Is there much difference in the wear parts you would need between the two types?

Kit is for a 4 synchro box - but two extra bearings are required if you want to do it fully. Also ask for an upgraded layshaft. You can mix and change what you get - it is not a "sealed" kit but rather a code number for a collection of parts to make ordering easier

I was using the 10% / one chapter rule, forgive me if I have applied it incorrectly. Alternatively, where I come from, people are sometimes even crazy enough to lend items to friends. A third option is as I said above: you can buy a copy from KC's website/ebay UK shop.

Just trying to help... thanks for your attentiveness.
