Why does my starter motor sound like its just spinning and not turning the motor over?

Because it is...
Assuming it's a common old Oz Mini-
Pull it out and look at the Bendix drive on the end, it might be stuck. If so wash it with thinners then put some powdered graphite on the spiral splines.

If it's a later style pre-engaged one (Rover, Gemini etc) the overrun `sprag' clutch on the pinion has had it.

Thats the one.

It doesn't do it every time but often enough to have tools on the floor.last time I pulled it out and the bendix seemed to be moving smoothly. I'll give it a clean and graphite like you suggest Doc.

Doc

How does the graphite go on the shaft? I realise it is different than oil which is a no no and I was told/have always used mineral turps to clean with and it leaves sort of lubricating film. Anyway gives me an excuse to buy a puffer pack of graphite
