my mini went in last thursday to get a new (second hand) transmission put in. Due to unforseen circumstances they couldnt start it till tuesday. its still in the shop and needed new bearings on almost everything a new oil pump new clutch housing the crank needs to be fixed and i've been told i could easily spend 3-4g on the thing! :C what was supposed to cost $700 including a service is now blown out to $3000 (which i don't have) i've already spent 8g on it and the mini may not be ready when i need it to drive home for my 21st this w/e FU$K! |

Bummer aboput your sick Mini. Unfortunately with the Mini the engine and gearbox share the oil. When the gearbox lets go, the resulting swarf gets pumped with the oil through the oil pump (and ruins it) which is before the filter. If it isn't caught early the filter will clog up and eventually the oil and swarf will end up in the bearings often scoring the journals and resulting in needing a crank grind along with new bearings. Complete stripdown time which is an obvious time to look at pistons, rings, cam etc. Might be worth looking at a good second hand power unit instead of just the gearbox. I had my gearbox take out an engine twice back in the 70's. Admittedly I used to drive the car harder then. I am a lot more sympathetic and treat my gearbox nicely these days. I have seen a mod that has a second magnetic sump plug on the plate over the oil pickup at the back of the gearbox. Would minimise metal particles getting to the pump. Good luck Pete |

If they have undertaken repairs without your request, then its their tough luck, take it to fair trading get your engine back. If they haven't started, get yourself a 2nd hand 1098 engine, use it until you can afford a rebuild. |

is your engine a 1275? if it is 3k for a rebuild and a reco box doesnt sound too horrible. Still sux when your not planning for it. |
