Was investigating an oil leak on the BOC (my first one ;)) and found this split pin coming OUT of the bottom of the sump on the driver's side (see pic). What's it there for?! :?

Oo0o0o0o0oo! And Dad and i degreased the whole engine - hence why it looks pretty - and now i actually know what the red block is meant to look like!

You'll find that is coming out of your clutch. The idea is that if you primary gear seal fails and lets oil into the clutch, that it will drip from the split pin to make it more obvious where the problem is - so that you don't just think the oil is just another random leak.

Wow! That's very logical. :D

So that would explain why the pin is kinda loose and not tightened up against the block? (Glad i didn't tighten it when i saw it ;))

The idea of the pin is also to stop the hole getting clogged up with dirt/greasy gunk

 Are you implying that the whole looks clogged up with dirt/greasy gunk? (It is the dirtiest part of the whole pic) ;)
