I believe that type of magnetic oil trap is fitted to the back of the gearbox on the drivers side where the oil pick up pipe bolts are. I've heard mixed reviews, if you don't clean it out often and let swarf build up, then it can all let go at once with obvious consequences! In my opinion it's probably more worthwhile doing frequent oil changes.

Did someone on here find some curved 'rare earth' (neomobdynium     that is BAAAAAD spelling) magnets at some stage?

Or was I dreaming that?

Just get an old speaker magnet and sick it on the bottom of the filter or a couple of long strip magnets up the sides

I like the idea of these ones!!

These are the ones to go to a higher temp though:

I think I'll get me some!!

Opps, sorry for the thread hijack, to bring it back on topic, i think you'd be better off putting these magnets on the oil filter than putting the trap on the oil pickup.

Cheers

I've run rare earth magnets on the spin-on filter for years. I get nothing on the magnetic sump plug- and when I cut a filter up once, you should have seen all the fine stuff! Most oil filters would be lucky to filter at 50 micron size, anything smaller just goes round.. and round.. and round.
The magnets trap all this muck.

<edit> I also run a centre oil pickup, and the Minispares extended sump plug/magnet.

I put one of those magnetic trap things on back of my S gearbox once, in 100 miles it was starting to restrict the intake to the pump so I took it off.
And wasn't that a bitch of a job, with the motor in the car and an LCB...
I'll never ever use one again. Anybody wants it, give me $50 it's yours.
Brand new, used once....
