is it possible to cut around the seem of one lh tank and attache to the back of another petrol tank? drill a hole in the top and bottom of it so fuel and air can pass easily between them but leave the wall to stop the momentum of the fuel rocking around so much.

has anyone done anything like this before?
what are the legal implications? would it need to be engineered certificated?
how hard is it to weld a hole free seem and grind it back flush?

(i'd appreciate it if no-one pointed out the fact you have to make sure there is no petrol vapour in either tank before you start cutting and welding. thank you)

.

i was about to cut up a l/h tank and make it into a r/h tank, it seems like it will fit but the reason why i didn't is that i think rust will inhibit the welds where you have welded the tank up

Actually I've got to point out just how careful you have to be about welding a fuel tank , it's not just the vapour you can smell , most workplaces will insist on the tank being cleaned inside with a steam cleaner till it's too hot to touch the tank and then 5 minutes more . You only get one chance when welding a bomb so be careful .

I have seen people cut an inch or so on the right hand side of the seam (looking from outside the boot) and weld a piece of sheet steel bent into the shape of the tank to enlarge it but considering the amount of Rover tanks about it's just easier to buy one of them .

Oh, andbat, you have to make sure there is no petrol vapour in either tank before you start cutting and welding.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :P

oh an if anyone has one lying around let me know. :)

edit: i've got 2 LH tanks lying around not doing anything is all.

Wow, I paid that for a RH tank a few years ago....

I must say though, it's hard to put a price on knowing you will make it to where you want to go because you have enough fuel. So in that regard it's probably very worth it!

Yeah I got one of those 10L plastic jerry cans in the back too, fits in really nicely on my boot board. Gives me 60L of fuel, good for Hay trips and such.
