Post subject: | Ignition Timing Problem? |
Hi All, I've just got a quick question about ignition timing; I have just swaped the engine in my mini and I'm now trying to get it started. I'm trying to follow the instrutions in the manual bit I'm a little confised, it says to turn the engine over until no 1 piston is at TDC and to do this you can take the rocker cover off and wait until cylinder 4's inlet valve just opens, you then move the engine a little futher until you can see 9deg on the fly wheel, then manual then says that the distributer rotor shoud be pointing towards no 1 spark plug segment in the distibutor but in mine it points toward spark plug number 4 I'm 180 deg out but every thing is set up the same as my old engine. Does any one have any idea what I've done? Is there a better way to set the timing? I was very careful to put the distrubutor back on the way it came off the other engine and also get the ht leads back the right way. Cheers, Brian.. |

It is possible that the Dizzy Drive shaft ahs been fitted 180 degrees out of alignment. Check with the manual to see if the offset in in the correct position when on TDC. |

one has to be tdc if 4 is rocking, and timing chain is right |

Thanks for the posts looks like you have all put me on the right track. I have just put the dissy back on the old engine and with both engines in the same position(TDC) the rotor is 180deg out, About 2 oclock for the new and about 7 oclock for the old engine. So it looks like the dissy drive is out on one of the engines. The question is, to fix my problem can I swap the HT leeds from cylinder 1 to 4 and 4 to 1, 2 to 3 and 3 to 2? Cheers, Brian |

ke?? no two motors are exactly the same cam degree and other factors must be taken into account ok easy way to do bring one up to tdc make sure the rockers are flat over 1 insert the dissy line it up and go from there ok i also looked at what you said bout swaping the leads you can do tjhis makka |

So you new engine has the dizzy drive shaft in the block in 180 degres out of phase and then you need to pull out the shaft and trune it around 180 degrees. Make sure when you pull out the shaft that you have a bolt screwed into the end of it so that when you refit it, it does not drop into the bottome of the engine. If so it means a part strip down and start again. |

Engine No Start. I swapped the ht leeds around and reset the timing, I now think I've got the timing and the ht leeds right, but the engine still will not start. I've checked i'm getting a good spark, fuel is getting to the carby's and battery is charged. What should I check next? as the engine does not even sound close to starting. Could I have damaged the engine by trying to start it with the ht leeds the wrong way around? Cheers, Brian |
