The good one is a Timken 3W5-8.
The not-so-good later one is a 7W5-8. I found only the UK made ones (RHP) last. I stuffed a Jap one in 3 days once.....

Ahoy there mateys, my mini has a noisey clutch bearing, i think i could possibly be called a thrust bearing, anyway its the one that the clutch arm pushes on to the clutch plate. Mine is making a most annoying noise at the moment which sounds very much like when my skateboard bearings dry out, so im going to get a new one to put in very soon BUT until then, is it possible to maybe spray some wd40 or something similar down the inspection hole and onto the bearing to quiet it down a little or while that ruin my clutch operation? thanks again for your time rock and/or roll trent |

i guess you could aim some oil down there as a temporary, use an oil can, with a hose extension, Use a very small bit and make sure you dont get the clutch (use minimum). or else you will have another. |

I wouldn't put anything in the clutch cover mate; oil or wd40, all that is going to do it find it's way onto the clutch plate, then you will have to replace that as well. If your going to replace the bearing, use the heavier duty one. They are more expensive, but last a heap longer than the standard one's. |

I've done 2 in the last couple of weeks, one on a clubman, and one on my car.... it'll be noisy now, but pretty soon it'll lock up and destroy the plate on your clutch diaphragm. And in the meantime, your clutch will stop working as it grabs the diaphragm and won't allow it to push in. They're a sealed bearing, so nothing you could spray in there would penetrate it, not that it's in a position you could spray anyway. $24 at Karcraft for the cheap one, and $55 for the good one. 90 minutes change over with beer breaks |

Sorry about resurrecting this (not so) old thread, but I recently was going to replace this particular bearing on another engine - took off the retaining clip from the bearing............the bearing was an amazingly loose fit on the plunger, like 2 or 3 mm's of clearance or more all the way around.....had a look at another I had laying about in my spares box and it was a tight fit. Was there 2 different sized plungers manufactured and used at various stages of production???? Hooroo |

Clubby ones were made to float about, had a springclip to locate them. The idea is so the bearing can self-align with the clutch better. I dunno if it makes any difference, I find both types OK. |
