Post subject: | Supercharger vs Turbo |
Hey i have a 1100cc Standard mini and im tossing up between a turbo and a supercharger. I was thinking my car doesnt rev high so a supercharger would be better. Am i thinking right? Piping etc. is no issue i can make up any kind of piping that i need but yeh im just unsure and wanted to see what you guys thought. |

You will get more serious grunt with a turbo. ![]() Benjamin has over 102HP ATW from his 1152 turbo on a Dyno Dynamics dyno, and he's not finished yet. ![]() |

I don't really find that a direct comparo of supercharger vs. turbo is all that fair. But is a good comparison for decided what you want/need. Yes a turbo in most cases will get you more grunt, and more tune-able and adjustable grunt at that. So for power this is probably the best way. Your sweet spot will be mid range to high rpm, depending on the turbo and manifolds chosen. The supercharger although doing the same job, cramming more air into the motor, goes about the idea quite a bit differently. After doing my car I'm leaning towards turbo as the best option. However, the bottom end and mid range can't be beat and the simplicity and cheapness is definitely a bonus when using 'chargers. A heavily worked supercharged beast is going to make alot of power and a lot of torque (gearboxes...look out!), as long as the 'charger size and type is chosen wisely. The main problem with 'chargers is efficiency. They are just not good at making high boost - they, generally speaking, make a lot of heat. But if your keeping the boost to a sensible road-car level, I see no problem with going eitherway. The car will be fun and fast anyways. It's up to you completely, go to www.turbominis.co.uk and have a browse, however i must say they are very biased on there, even though many users have superchargerd cars they will ALWAYS suggest turbo as the best option. |

what i remember from vizard, just info no opion (although i like superchargers more) turbos use energy from the exhaust an in this process a bit of it escapes as the exhausts moves around the turbine, also some of it may be lost ith low off valves where energy has gone into compressing the air and then it is just waisted. superchargers however run of the belt drive and don't loose so much energy but more power is needed to turn them. all the air they compress however goes into the cylinder and not out a blow off valve. |

a supercharger will give you all you need from a mini, trust me! going for a turbo is just for the psshhht from the bov. ![]() |

Any turbo will make that sound. Whether it be from the wastegate, BOV or from compressor stall though is another matter. |

OK thanks. Im still undecided. im leaning towards a supercharger just because i like the idea of setting the supercharger to boost from idle to 5500-6000 rpm. What kinda rpm would a turbo kick in? because if it kicked in at 3000rpm then i would maybe think bout a turbo but anything higher then that i dnt think its worth it in my car. And why im asking questions should my 1100cc stock engine rev higher then 5500rpm? |

i reckon supercharger is the way to go, they just don't seem so ricey are more sophisticated. if you need more convinceing watch mad max 1 & 2. the black car has an awesome supercharger in it. (anyone know what car that is?) some-one did a mini version on here, i'll search for the photo. edit ![]() edit 2: yeah it's about the power not the look, but you gotta admit it is cool |

d1ck0 wrote: The only issue I have is with the electronic clutch on the Blower. ![]() ![]() my supercharger has an electronic clutch, its wired through a relay to be on when the ignition is, but i could put it through a switch.. but then i'd have to have a bypass as the supercharger creates a restriction in the intake if its not moving. I had to drive it like that when the belt broke.. |
