Post subject: | CV Joints and Bearings? |
I'm putting together my metro brakes and i am having trouble sliding the bearing onto the CV, its not in the hub yet, just playing around by hand. Should it be loose and slide around (like one of them does) or should it be tight? |

It shouldn't be so loose that it slides all over the place, but not too tight that you'll have trouble fitting it, either. When I fitted mine a couple of weeks ago the bearings were a neat fit on the CV/stub axle (although I fitted the bearings to the hub, and then the hub to the CV on the car). |

they are a tap in fit... the easiest way I find is to make a special tool to press the new shell in... I call it Simon's Special Tool #4512 - get the old bearing shell, and grind around the outside of it so it's a sloppy fit in the hub. To use it, invert it so the thin edges of the 2 shells are together, and tap it with a hammer to press the new shell in. trying to use a drift or whatever against the new shell will only damage it because it's such a small area you've got to hit, using the old shell upside down gives a bigger area to hit, a sacrificial face, and it's exactly the right size I'm bad at explaining it - does it make sense? |

Hey, I've got one of those! 'Cept mine wasn't resized, so had to be drifted back out once the new bearings were fitted ![]() |
