I just fitted pulsar dizzy! Getting great spark to all four cylinders, but ahve NFI how to time it up ect... . Cant get car started, it backfired in one position, turned it around about ten degrees and that stopped, but it still wont start. Im pretty sure the leads are on right, although a pic would help (or diagram) if anyone has one that I can go by! I am borrowing a timing light from my dad tonight, but dont know how to use it. I would really love to get the thing up and running tomorrow, so please tell me how the hell to time it ect... pics ect...

P.S I read lots of people writing top dead centre, but what does that mean in relation to the distributor? Maybe a dumb question, but i am a P.E teacher afterall!

ahhhhhh that explains it all
ok number 1 cylinder is the one next to the fan ok remove your spark plugs grab the fan turn it till a the piston is at the top of it's stroke useing a small screw driver go slow as not to damage anything you need to hold the driver ok when you feel the pistonstop and start to fall reverse the fan till it comes up that is top dead centre
btw stick the screw driver in the spark plug hole

TDC means the #1 piston is right up the top..
There is a timing mark on the flywheel marked 1/4, if it's a later Clubbie there's a mark on the front pulley too.

If the piston next to the fan is number one, I think I have my leads on wrong! So does that mean I take the cap of and when the rotor is pointing at number one, that lead goes to it, and working from right to left, the next plug lead from the rotor will go to number three cylinder (2nd from right), then the third rotor position to number four cylinder (1st on left), and the last one goes to number 2 cylinder (third from left).
The rotor goes in anti clockwise direction , so I gather you count from right to left, which is where I have been going wrong me thinks?
If this is right where do I hook up the timing light and what do I do with it? :?

Anyone know how I go about timing it up properly with a timing light, Ive picked one up, but thats about where my knowledge on timing ends :(

Steve

P.S Roughly where should the vacuum advance on a pulsar dizzy be facing, from the front on perspective?

if you have it at tdc on #1 cylinder there is your referance point

Post subject:  timing

to carry out timing using a timing light:-
1.loosen 2 bolts that hold timing cover on clutch housing at 12 o'clock position and rotate cover.rotate engine until you see the 5 degree mark on flywheel, you will need a mirror and torch to see these marks easily.i normally mark the 5 degree position with a white texta or paint so its easier to see with timing light.
2.cap the vacuum line to disi with a screw driver
3.if your timing light is a clip on type just cilp it on to number 1 ign lead,if its a plug type then hook it up between nbr 1 spark plug and nbr 1 ign lead.
hook the positive lead of light to your starter solenoid which has 12v and the other lead to chassis ground
4.with eng running check timing by looking at flywheel timing marks with timing light and mirror
5.if adjustment required loosen disi and rotate until timing is correct
6.now adjust idle speed
7.with vacuum line connected check timing (using timing light) advances when eng revs up
