Post subject:  1275 motor

Hi,
I have a 12YD/Ta/H block 40+ and 12G1683 crank, is this a good 1275 motor to rebuild or is it better to just buy a cheap imported motor.
Thanks

You will find that the import motors still will need work, possibly a full rebuild. If they don't, no doubt they will be expensive.

Go rebuild the one you have, I recon.

Yes it is as good or better than a later Metro one. Those blocks are strong and good for big bores, the crank is a big journal, tufftrided.
Some 1275 A+ rods and it'll be perfect! :wink:

Hi,
Thanks DrMini,
The block is stamped 12YD/Ta/H, note little "a". I have seen a few Mark 1 Cooper S's at shows with 9F/SA/Y engine number, note big "A", even though the plate says 9F/Sa/Y.
In the Mini Experience, it said that most cars tended to have small "a" on the ID plate and Big "A" on the block. Did some cars come with a Little "a" stamping and others with a Big "A". Or was there just different sets of stamps. Have you seen both.
Thanks

Ta is used on blocks. Always stamped lower case. SA means close ratio (Cooper) gears, Ta means transverse I think. Common on remote boxes & 1100 & 1100S.
If the Ta is stamped TA, somebody has restamped it... :shock:

From the 1100 workshop manual.

12 = Capacity of engine
Y = Australian manufacture
D = Variation to power unit 'D' = 4:1 Final drive
Ta = Std. ratio remote centre change
H = High compression

Been a while since I had a MK1 S motor, not sure. My Mk2 S motor is 9F/XE/Y .
<edit> Think Mk1 S was /SA, not sure about 997 & 998 Cooper.
