Hi, I have a 12YD/Ta/H block 40+ and 12G1683 crank, is this a good 1275 motor to rebuild or is it better to just buy a cheap imported motor. Thanks |

You will find that the import motors still will need work, possibly a full rebuild. If they don't, no doubt they will be expensive. Go rebuild the one you have, I recon. |

Yes it is as good or better than a later Metro one. Those blocks are strong and good for big bores, the crank is a big journal, tufftrided. Some 1275 A+ rods and it'll be perfect! ![]() |

Hi, Thanks DrMini, The block is stamped 12YD/Ta/H, note little "a". I have seen a few Mark 1 Cooper S's at shows with 9F/SA/Y engine number, note big "A", even though the plate says 9F/Sa/Y. In the Mini Experience, it said that most cars tended to have small "a" on the ID plate and Big "A" on the block. Did some cars come with a Little "a" stamping and others with a Big "A". Or was there just different sets of stamps. Have you seen both. Thanks |

Ta is used on blocks. Always stamped lower case. SA means close ratio (Cooper) gears, Ta means transverse I think. Common on remote boxes & 1100 & 1100S. If the Ta is stamped TA, somebody has restamped it... ![]() |

From the 1100 workshop manual. 12 = Capacity of engine Y = Australian manufacture D = Variation to power unit 'D' = 4:1 Final drive Ta = Std. ratio remote centre change H = High compression |

Been a while since I had a MK1 S motor, not sure. My Mk2 S motor is 9F/XE/Y . <edit> Think Mk1 S was /SA, not sure about 997 & 998 Cooper. |
