Post subject: | Clutch & box |
Hi Guys, (non-gender specific) I am having problems with the box on my 998 rod change clubby. I could only find third gear the other day, fine now... ![]() I have made the expensive decision to fix it, I'm going to give it a crack myself. Of course I want to put better parts in on a budget. I'm looking at the Clutch, Diaphragm, Lighten flywheel & Gears (only the ones needed). I want to get the right combination of parts with out going overboard. I have between $800 - $1,000 to spend. What do you recommend? |

If your gonna tackle the g/box yourself, take note you will need a puller to remove the first motion shaft/top gear and the special sockets to fit the mainshaft nut and 1st M/shaft nut which are usually super tight and a PITA to undo unless you have the right equipment. Unless the box has suffered a lot of abuse, you should be able to re-use all the gears and concentrate your resources (read $$$$$) on buying new synchro rings, layshaft, synchro hub plunger springs and all the necessary bearings. If the spiggot bearing on the main shaft has cakked itself, you may need a new mainshaft. I have seen examples where they have totally disintergrated! I expect you would be up for $500-$600 in parts for the gearbox alone, to do a proper job. That's what I would concentrate on first, then you could check with Russell Engineering up there about getting your flywheel and pressure plate all lightened up and balance properly. |

most leyland boxes have worn 1/2 selector, outer gear ring and second gear. pay particular attention to these as this is what turns a gearbox rebuild expensive |
