I bought my mini with a gear shifting problem.
The gearstick won't change smoothly into the down gears being 2nd 4th and reverse without abit of force. Once in gear the car drives smooth. The gear stick moves smooth into the top gears though being 1st and 3rd.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

Check to see there isn't anything blocking the lever (carpet , muck etc) or the linkages . Also check to see your engine steady brace/s are holding the motor straight and not twisting it or making it lean too far forward .

yes that can cause a nice problem when your engine steadys bushes are worn... or when the mounts are stuffed been there

What type is it.....rod change or remote?? If remote, check the tightness of the splines on the transfer rods at the back of the gearbox.

Something is bent or the rubber is perished that holds the support rod to the box (the bar that runs from the extension under the floor).
