Post subject:  Engine Number Issues

Hi all,

Need a few suggestions. Vic Police have issued me a new engine number to have stamped on the block. However there is no room where the current engine number is. Does anyone have any ideas on where else I can stamp the number?

Thanks.

I'd have the old number machined off and stamp the new one in its place.

But the obvious question is, why were you issued a new number :?: :?:

I purchased the car in Sydney and went to register it here in VIC and found grind marks near the engine number. The car went to Vic Theft Squad for review and once cleared, they said i can register it but need a new engine number. It's going to vicroads this Thurs to be registered. I have to have the new number stamped on by then.

I have spoken to LINK Auto, and they have looked at it and suggest somewhere above the distributor.

why don't you grind the old number off? a flapper disc on a 4" angle grinder would do a nice job of it

I know someone who has rubbed engine numbers off blocks with an oil stone, took a long time, but it was done

Unfortunately Vicroads require the old engine # to be visable so thay can say here's the old one - looks ok. and here's the new one. job well done, you can now register the car.

VICRoads sound like they are being totally unreasonable and stupid....just say the original block was stolen...just coz it don't come up in their records they are saying OK - whack our number on and she'll be sweet.

stamp it on a plate then rivet over the top where the holes are- like the pommy ones are.

I remember seeing that one for sale when I was looking around for a new Mini. The car looked from the ad I saw to be in good nick. Best of luck with the engine number as wel as the car.

That used to be illegal here, maybe still is- all Oz states insisted that the numbers be stamped into the block. `coz they don't trust us convicts not to change em....

well just want to say all went well at vicroads today. Link Auto stamped the new number above the distributor. Vicroads was fine with this. So rego is no longer NOI55C. New rego is WAF050. Again these will probably only be temporary for a few months while i decide what personalised plates to get. Very hard desicion to make.
