Post subject: | Bearings |
Greetings all, does anyone know if 2 different size bearings were used on the first motion shaft where the clutch housing fits? I seem to have an inner race that is too big for the outer shell in the housing! The housing won't push onto the engine/box! Any comments appreciated. ![]() |

Yes, the later outrigger bearings are different bore in the outer ring. You MUST replace the ring with the one in the box, to fit these bearings. ![]() |

Thanks Doc. Is there an easy way to remove the ring from the housing, or is heat the only way? Thanx |

There are various ways. Proper puller is nice but no... I don't have one. ![]() I weld a big flat washer onto a bolt, sit the washer & bolt inside the bearing and lightly tack weld in 6 places with the MIG. Then I put a piece of exhaust tube on the housing over the bearing, with a THICK washer, put nut on bolt and wind it out. Easy peasy. ![]() Make sure you remove the little snap ring/circlip, first! ![]() |

Hot tip - while trying to think of a quick and easy way to remove the shell, i spotted my heat gun paint stripper. Gave the housing a quick blast with that, turned it over, hit it with a BFH and bingo - bearing shell dropped out onto floor. Took all of 2 minutes, including getting new one in. Better than using oxy-acetylene!!! |

Just be careful using heat on cast items like the gearbox housing. Too much, and you'll change the metal structure causing stress raisers, and embrittlement. |
