Ok - the carb fell to bits - so I scavenged bits from another amd now its running again.

But - there is a always a but

I have the carb completely is leaned off - the jet is flush with the bridge - yet its running rough, bogs down under load, wont rev and is blowing black smoke just like its running rich.

The float lifter is making no apprecable difference to the idle speed or quality suggesting that is the mixture is fine.

I have run out ideas

It sounds like your float bowl is stuck open. Take off the top of the float bowl and check the needle and seat is sealing.

If its blowing that much black smoke then its raw unmetered fuel. Bell not sticking half way up.

Check the centering on the jet and needle.

Check that the fuel bowl is not to high or the wrong angle ?? and that fuel is just seeping into the motor.

Are the jet and needle both from the carb you used before or are they a mixture ?

they are the originals - the parts replaceed were the mechanical linkages to the jet.

I also just checked the float, the needle appears to be working and the float level is set correctly - 3/8 gap between the bowl topand the float whilst just contacting the needle.

But it makes sense to be that area

So maybe the float needle is cactus

I have only used grose needles before - are these ok for small carbs or I am better sticking with the normal ones.

I ll post this seperately - thanks everybody

The float needle is not the problem. The needle is working just fine and is sealing perfectly when its inserted in the seat. The floast also appears to be OK

So back to the drawing board

Is the needle centred? is the float full of fuel?

try changing the float needle & seat - they are notorious for wear.
problem must be in the float bowl region if its flooding

The float should not be full of fuel....thats why they call it a float...sometimes they get pinholes...tis what I meant.

nup the the bowl is full of fuel - not the float - and floats in the bowl without striking the sides - so its centred - tis what I meant

Excellent :!: the other needle I was referring to was the Jet Needle...does the piston move up and down smoothly without interference? tis what I meant
