Post subject:  Database of gearbox/diff ratios

So I've put an Excel spreadsheet together to calculate road speed vs revs in each gear, and I've got a couple of common gear / diff ratio combinations which I snarfed from the technical data section on minis.com.au. I'm pretty sure though that this is an incomplete and/or incorrect list, so I'm looking for something authoritative.

Can someone point me in the right direction, or quote correct numbers off the top of their head?

Once I get accurate data, I'll put the spreadsheet up on the web somewhere for others to enjoy. I always knew my road speed vs revs in 4th, but it's interesting to compare with other wheel/tyre and diff combinations :)

4.26:1 (Morris 1100 Australian)
4.133:1 (Morris 1100S 12YD engines, UK Morris 1100)
3.93:1
3.765:1 (Morris 1100S 12Y engines, Mini Deluxe, Mini 850)
3.647:1 (often called 3.65:1, Clubman 1100, K 1100)
3.44:1 (Cooper S and late Aussie production)
3.10:1
2.95:1
2.76:1

Automatics...
3.48:1 (early UK Automatics)
3.27:1 (Morris 1100 Auto, Minimatic)

They're all final drive ratios I assume?

What about gearbox ratios? Surely they're not the same in every 'box..?

Hey guys;

Do you know what the standard Moke ratio's are?
I've got a standard A+ in mine which has 15 teeth on the pinion and 65 teeth on the crown, primary gear has 30 teeth, not 29. Not sure what that makes it in ratio figures?

4th gear is 1:1 no matter what gearbox.

The primary gears are 24/31/24 on the normal box and 29/37/29 with the fine tooth A+ gears.
There is also a 30/37/29 economy gearset as well.

65 divided by 15 = 4.33:1 and the 30 tooth primary gear means you have an economy model Metro engine. :shock:

What about the 3.2?? :1 , I ran one years ago and it was great , just can't remember the full figure it calculated too though .

Sorry, you'll have to excuse my stupidity here. The data I have lists ratios for each gear:

1st - 3.200, 2nd - 1.916, 3rd - 1.357, 4th - 1.000. Can you explain how that relates to 29/37/29 etc. (which I assume are teeth counts)?

The 29/37/29 is the teeth count on the primary gears.

I'd forgotton all about this, thanks willy for reminding me about it :D

I've updated the spreadsheet with ratios taken from my workshop manual, but I'm sure there are still errors in there. I'd appreciate suggestions, corrections etc. so I can update the spreadsheet for all.

Anyone interested in it can grab it here.

Note that the drop gears in all automatics are not 1:1.
So, the automatic's 3.26:1 diff ratio becomes 3.76:1, in 4th gear.

No, these 3.26 diff gears will not fit in a manual... if you were wondering. It's too big... :cry:

Post subject:  Gearbox abd diff ratios.

I remember Years ago (over 20) I was given a good list of gears versus diffs versus speeds by our great Friend Jack Read. It helped me work out the best Diff ratio to use for speedway. Perhaps Matt the Miniman can help you here. Jack faxed me a whole sperad sheet but un fortunately today the paper has gone blank thanks to old fax paper. I am sure Jack will have this in his computer still.

Thanks Doc, the auto was a late addition as I saw it in the workshop manual at the last minute. Didn't notice the drop gear ratio.

Anything else obviously wrong with the ratios?

Revs per 100km/60mile would be good to

EG 3.44 - 4000rpm/100km (thats close enough for me :lol: i think it is like 3900 or so somebody will correct me if im wrong)

I think i have this info in an old tuning book i will have a look tomorrow

Used in 63HP SPI injection-Coopers (at least in Europe).

Pt. N° - Crown - / Pt. N° - pinion - Ratio
DAM6327 59 DAM6243 DAM2808 19 3.105
DAM2806 61 DAM2807 DAM2808 19 3.211

3,21:1 uses the same pinion as the 3,1:1.

Going to use that too.
sounds a good compromise between 3,1 (slithly too long) and 3,44 (slightly too short) - for my taste at least :)
