my brother has a clubman fuel gauge and it reads full but yet the tank is empty the wires are not crossed what would be the reason for this????

That there is no fuel 
Seriously it could be the sender, do a search on here and you should be able to find something. You should be able to take a multimeter reading at the sender. to check, i'm not sure what the resistance should be, do a search on here and you might find it. |

disconnect the wires to the tank & see if the gauge zero's. Is the temp guage reading OK? If so, my bet its the tank unit thats r00ted. |

I had a problem very similar recently. I had an 850 fuel tank (Sender is screwed in to tank) with a Mini K speedo which required a later (Bayonet) type sender. Scott |

Get a Moke. You can take off the four inch filler cap and peer into the tank.* Who needs a gauge? *Note, not recommended while driving! 
I haven't had a Mini with an accurate fuel gauge yet. |

Take the sender out and check and see if there is petrol inside the float. If there is, drill a small hole in the end of it and once empty, put a small screw into the hole.. Worked for me and my guage is still close enough for accuracy... |

By all means take the sender out. Fuel in the float is not going to be the problem, this would actually cause a lower fuel reading on the gauge. If the gauge zeros when you remove the wires from it, this means that the sender unit is stuck on full or S/C. For the former, check that the long arm that the float fits in has not slipped over one of the lugs that stick out the back of the sender. This will stop the float from following the fuel level in the tank. If you have your copy of the Ultimate Mini CD, there is picture of the sender unit in the file "Mini cooper 997 Parts list with Austin 998 supplement". Check under this file, D1-D6 Fuel System. |

When questions like this come up every one puts in their thoughts and problems they had to compare it and all it does is confuse the hell of the person that originally asked the qiestion. First thing I woud suggest this person to do is disconnect the sender unit and see what happens. Then with the ignition in the on position try and connect the two wires on the sender unit together and see if it does anything. Wires together should read one way and seperated the other. Remember that some Minis read full when wires are joined or touched together and some read empty. Check that gauge and sender are compatible. Checking Gauges requires a Multimeter and a Gauge tester would be very handy too. Do it step by step. The next step would be to take the sender out of the tank (No smoking please) hook the wires to it and try and operate it manually see how the gauge responds. Note the position of the sender located in the tank and make sure the float arm is not obstructed by anything when it swings from full to empty position. Also check that thereis no forign objects that might have accidently fallen in the tank. A hole in the float will make the float sink and read empty or lower than it should read. |
