I'm tidying up a master cylinder, a dual one with the plastic reservoir on the side , and took the stub bolt out of the top for a scrub. Underneath is a triangle spacer thingy. Does anyone know which way up this goes (if it matters)? I think I knocked it as I took the bolt out so not sure if the way up it was is correct (it kinda jiggled about in the hole). This of course will make no sense unless you've seen one, but hopefully somebody knows what I'm on about

smac - the one in the spare MC I have looks symmetrical to me, so I would hazard a guess it makes no diff which way it fits. Hope this helps. |

Are we talking about the same thing? This is a flat piece of metal that has the ends folded toward each other to form a triangle. On the flat at the bottom there is a wear mark so that looks like it's been pressed on by the piston (so the point where the two ends meet would be facing up to the bolt), however when I opened the unit the triangle was lying on it's side, so rather than pressing on the piston in would be sitting over/around the piston, pressing on what ever it is that's below it.... damn I knew I should have taken a pic... |

Not 100% understanding of what you talking about is it small ? the diagram I have is not clear bu there is something that could be what you discribe sitting under the top metal screw 'bolt' on top of the plunger and spring with a nipple sticking out of the top - flat(bottom) against nipple points toward bolt I've got a picture but stupid server at work won't let me access Photobucket I have sent it to your email |

When i took the 13/16" bolt off, the triangular dooflaky was sitting in the bore on top of the piston on its triangular edges, not with one flat of the triangle on the piston. ie it looks like a triangle shape from the top. If that makes any sense.

Thanks for the pic - yes it's the part marked with the right hand most line on no. 14. AEG - same as mine, when I lifted the bolt away it was lying on it's side, however the wear mark would indicate it used to have the centre flat facing down which is what made me think it I had knocked it. Anybody know for sure? Or know if it matters? On it's side the spacer will contact the spring retainer rather than the top of the plunger, therefore less preload or something? Here's the pic:

If it was me (and it will be one day as I have dismanteled the same M/C and bagged the bits for future rebuild) I would put the flat down and the points up - looks like that in the diagram |
