Post subject: | Volt Gauge |
Just instaled a Speco Volt Gauge It reads 12 Vots at idle bounce between 12 -11 1/2 with Blinkers and to 0 with the lights on Is this normal but I'm guessing the Alternator is not charging enough |

You've not got it wired properly then, it should be connected to the main battery cable at the solenoid, and a good earth on the body. bring it over. ![]() |

You want to know what the battery voltage is, not how bad your wiring is. I wouldn't bother unless it's wired either off the battery cable at solenoid, or via separate wiring right back to the battery. Both these will read the same really. |

We wired to Solenoid and to the body for the Earth. Stoped the Bouncing Blinker..but Still 0 for Head lights |

Your light wire to the speco guage is losing earth more than likely when the headlights come on. How do I explain... ummm ... undo the earth from the guage and tell me if it still does the same thing with headlights, or if it does nothing at all. Pete. |

Yeah, I know that. I had EXACTLY the same problem with a speco guage. Turns out I didnt have the speco guage earthed (not the earth FOR the guage) ... hard to explain... when I ran the wire and touched it on the chassis somewhere metal, the light worked. I turned on lights, dropped to 0, turn off lights and the guage reads correctly, but no lights (obviously) Found the earth loose and put it on. Presto. |

Jim, sounds like you have more voltage drops than you want to know about in your car... If you want to use the gauge permanently to read actual battery voltage. you will have to get the positive wire to it from your Starter solenoid battery side. But if you wire it direct and not switching it, when the car is turned of it will flatten your battery when car is parked for more than a day or so. My advice would be to wire it through a small relay switched by the ignition switch. Don't let the smoke out or it will never work then ! |

Yep I have it on the Starter solenoid with the earth to the body now. I'll actualy disconnect i to night or i'll check the earth (back of gauge) if i have the time tonight |
