well as u've prolly worked out im doing kind of a major minor overhaul while i dont need my car.
in doing this im trying to fix up the crap that previous owners manage to come up with.

ok this is a pipe that has been squeezed shut. it's at the back of my block on the radiator side directly under the extractor.
also u can see the fact that my engine is 98% covered in oil. it leaks from EVERYWHERE not one set place.
i remember someone telling me about a breather like this that sometimes is closed but should be opened and had a oil breather put on. A mate said something like that stopped his major oil leak problem
any ideas?

ok at the top u can see a hose coming off the rocker cover, it dribbles out a bit of oil every now and then.
im thinking my engine shouldnt have an opening at all, and if it does i should put a breather on it???/


HELP ME WITH MY OIL LEAKS!
i run 20/50 oil
and i have great oil pressure
warm idle it's about 50 on the smiths guage.

Mate.....That pipe that is pressed shut should have a breather on it...get another breather and replace it and also replace the gasket at the same time. The hose should (I think go the the carb).

The only breath you have at the moment is by that hose, thats why you have oil pissing out everywhere

To start with, I'd get a breather/oil trap from a 998 Clubbie or Cooper S (same thing) and put it on where that crimped pipe is. No idea what BMC were thinking when they came up with that one, they did it for a while. The minute the motor gets a few miles up and needs some breathers, it's got none!
I'd run it to a catch tank which has some breather holes at the top, (or put a filter on it if you must). I'd run a hose from the rockers into the catch tank, too. :wink:
Had my 1310 like that for years now, no problems, it can breathe, but I get SFA in the catch tank.

That pipe is the breather!

The book says ...
Breathing System
A semi sealed crankcase ventilation system was introduced on later engines. The system consists of:
1. A front side cover containing a gauze separator vented to the atmosphere through a .020 in (0.508mm.) slot in the intake tube (just like yours)
2. A rocker cover containing a gauze separator and a hose outlet.
3. A non vented oil cap.
4. An adaptor fitted between the carburettor body and the air filter adaptor.
5. A hose connecting 2 and 4.
This system does not require periodic service.[/b]

Nor does it work very well, when they get old... :x
Probably worth checking if his other hoses are blocked though!
It got superseded by the flame trap & PCV valve, SU suction chamber pipe on later cars. :wink:

I dont have a hose one mine but I did put a K&N filter on it.
Prior Dr recon the box and put the engine back together..It was leaking oil from the number one side of the box...
Not now...well a dribble maybe

can i just stick those filter thingys on em than a catch tank?
it's just having a catch tank is a fair bit of messing around then clamping an oil breather onto the top of the side pipe and the rocker cover hose.

The catch tank is easy to do as per Dr info.
The Breath if you have one is easy also if you have one. You can run it with out a filter as most people do...i just like the bling Bling

Filters are usually to stop things getting IN. If you fit them on all your breathers and they clog with oily sludge you are back where you started... no breathing.

If you want "Bling" I'd get a shiny polished ally catch tank and shmick braided lines to it.
Like Oz had on his racer.. :wink:
