Is it possible to convert the roof of a classic mini so that it comes off? with it still being a hard top?

Perhaps look at a ragtop sunroof or all glass roof?
That'd have the same effect without all the engineerig needed.

I'd love a convertable hardtop mini, but it wouldn't be easy.
First up you'd have to start with a 60's shell to help get aroung some of the
ADR and compliance stuff. Once the car is built as a complete convertable,
just get a roof made from fibreglass or something to keep it light.

Too much work for me to do.
:D

Yes, but it wouldn't be easy. You could also research carson tops. They're like a rigid soft top. With a carson top the hardest part is getting the mini made into a convertible and legally registered. The top itself is relatively easy.

hmmm.

Just wondering because on the weekend I took a work mates toyota celica twin turbo for a drive, and it had a targa top, and it was really really really nice... wouldnt mind it if I could do that to a mini, maybe a couple of projects down the track.

A "Webasto" style roof only leaves about six inches inside the gutters when it is open - search for a British Open Classic (Rover) model as they have this type of roof
