 Post subject: 16 Blade Metal Fans

I've read all sorts of stuff on the effect on cooling that can occur when you fit engine fans the wrong way round. All fans appear to have some aerofoil shape to them particularly the export 6 blade fan.
It follows therefore that installation is critical for cooling.

Does anybody know which way round a 16 blade metal fan fits to a Cooper S ? The blades are off set . Do you install it with the blades closest to the radiator? If thats the case then the support ribs on each blade would face the block . Or is it the other way round?


Ive also misplaced the spacer that fits between the pulley and the fan. Does anyone know how thick it is? I need to spend an hour at the lathe

I believe you mount it with the support ribs facing the radiator, but somebody will need to confirm.

The spacer comes in 5mm and 10mm (I think, I haven't measured them) The thinner one for roundnose, thicker for Clubman. If you are going to make one up you can assess what thickness you want for your application. I believe the ideal position for the fan is half out of the shroud (did I hear that somewhere?) so you could make your spacer to suit. Just make sure the bolts are the correct length or it won't turn.

Correct - plus it looks nicer that way :lol:

If you make the spacer too thick, you will be cursing if you need to remove the fan with the rad in situ.

The thin (steel) factory one has part no. 12A312 so I theeeenk it would be UK sourced.
The fan itself is (or was) 12A404
Go figure

I don't believe my 1964 parts book lists it, so maybe it is later. I'll check the number again anyway, just in case I missed it. I have a competition pulley on my car and it may not be used with that as the cast pulley has a thicker boss.

Thanks everyone for the input . Ive set up the cowl and about 5mm is right .

It got me interested and I trolled the parts book (mine is the loose leaf BMC dealer Book and was updated till MK2 s
Engines covered 850:998: Coop[er 1275 and MK2: 1098
and 12Y

The same spacer was fitted to all cars except the 850 ( 12A312)
The pulley was the same on all AYA22 but early 850 it was numbered 2A601 ( thats what the book says but I thought that S's had a cast pulley - or maybe it was the pump that was cast iron)
There was a stiffener fitted to the front of the fan on 850 and Cooper S ( 2A803) It looks like a pressed cross in the book
Fans : the 16 blade metal fan is listed for all cars but I suspect it was retro fitted as No 12A404 and changed to 12G1305 and remained the same to 12Y's. The 11 blade plastic is 12G1305

Just found reference to two additional pulley Nos lised as for Cooper S which I suspect may have been either cast or of bigger dia. Part No 12A565 and 12A667
Does that mean that early S's were delivered with the standard tin pulley?
Anybody know?

All S engines came with the pressed steel pulley 2A601, as far as I know (3-7/8" diam?).

I could be wrong- wouldn't be the first time, more like the millionth :(

If you Google 12a312 (the spacer part number) you will find some interesting background, including an extensive Mini cooling article on MiniMania, and a description of the spacer on plminishop.com (you can buy a spacer for GBP 1 plus postage).
Googling Mini part numbers has taught me a lot and I've managed to purchase obscure items from some overseas Mini parts shops (most recent was the metal bracket that supports the PCV on a MK II S).
