Post subject:  Brake conversion

Hi all,

I'm looking into fitting some cooper (not S) discs to a drum braked car and am trying to figure out what the costs are gonna end up being. Now before anyone tells me that I could get better/more stopping power from well adjusted drums, I'm already aware of that, but the convinience of not having to adjust drums all the time REALLY appeals to me. Anyway I've never had a mini with constantly adjusted drums...so I guess you could say that on average cooper discs would in fact give better braking performance

Also, I've noticed that there are seal kits etc. pretty easily available in the UK so I don't have a problem with rebuilding a set either.

So, what will I need? I'm assuming that all I would need is the hubs, discs and calipers since they use the same drive shafts as drums right? and would I need a booster? If so, what are the boosters that were used? does anyone have part numbers I should be looking for?

PS. I would kill for a set of 7.5 S discs, but they're way beyond my budget

If you can source the cooper brake bits needed, you will probably find that you will pay as much as for a set of 'S' brakes and believe me, I know which one I would be using. The brakes on my cooper, even in top condition, were not as efficient as drums, hence the provision of "S' brakes to replace them.

hi Thommo
the drive flanges on cooper disc are different to drum as well. you will find that most s/h sets will need rebuilding. there are a few other problems that you will run into with conversion. if you want to look at a set and compare them to drums, send me a P.M. and you can look at a set I have to see what you are going to need for conversion.

thanks for the replies guys

I've seen a few sets around (in fact theres a set on ebay at the moment) that have been a whole lot cheaper that cooper S brakes (even once a complete rebuild and postage have been taken into account...possibly for as little as about $600, but thats why I wanted to check if there's anything I'm missing :? )

Thanks for the offer David, I might get in touch for a look at some stage over summer (I'm in exam mode at the moment....sorta  ) I'm not in any rush, just sorta having a look at whats out there and involved in the swap
