Post subject:  buying tyres for hillclimb racing
hey, i'm going to start hillclimb racing next year and i'm nort sure what tyres are best to be used, if anyone knows what tyres you should use when racing on the hillclimb circuits and where to buy them from then please comment me back or even show me some pictures of them

Depends on what size wheels you have. I'm no expert on tyres, but have been doing a bit of research on them lately, the most popular choice are either yokohamas or dunlops for good hillclimb/tarmac rally tyres.

thanks for the advice, the size of the wheels at the moment are 10 inch but i might upgrade to 13's

Do a search on here on wheel sizes as the jury's still out about whether 13's are better or not , most of them will increase your unsprung weight as well . What class are you planning on going in and what tyre's are allowed to start with as well ?

i'm not sure yet, because at the moment i would be raing in the junior category, plus i don't know that much about the groups

At the moment it looks like the fastest tyre for historic Minis (10 x 5 rims) are the Hoosier TD 165/70-10 at about $220 each. Not far behind are the Yokohama A032R 165/70 -10 at about $200 each.
The Hoosier has a very ordinary tread pattern, much like an old cross-ply road tyre (sorry the picture isn't very clear)

The Yokie has a more distinct tread pattern.

Yes , there are a lot of drivers who use 10's on hillclimbers , you might be best to go to your nearest course and talk to the current drivers and have a look at their setups . Most I've found will be very helpful to someone starting out .

The tyres I listed earlier are to suit 10" diameter wheels, they are both 165/70/10 and would be the best choice for Historic, Improved Production, or Club Car classes where you must run 'road' tyres or tyres deemed appropriate and listed by CAMS . If you are intending to run as a Sports Sedan, you are then allowed to run racing slicks which are also available to suit 10" diameter wheels.

Here's a pic of 4 regular hillclimb Minis in Vic. ( 2 are Historic entrants and the other 2, the ones in the middle, usually run in the Improved Production class. All are on 10" wheels and I'm pretty sure all are on Hoosiers as well.

sausage27, you should come out to the hillclimb at Morwell and you can chat with the Mini drivers that drive there. A very friendly lot, well most of them anyway.. :wink:

Next meet will be a twilight one on Saturday, Dec 8 and racing begins around 2:00PM.

i think me and norm gowers are the only two hillclimb minis that run 13's in victoria (my personal opinion is they are better but others disagree), as a few people have said go to an event and talk to the drivers.. i dont know if i will be at the next morwell one, but maybe, not going to the grand day out so who knows. there arent usually many minis at the club ones to be honest (has been just me a couple of times recently at morwell). victorian championship round is the best for minis but just talking to the general competitors at a club event will help you out heaps. hope to be racing against you soon, junior class is growing.

to answer your question i run a dunlop d98j tyre, good all round performance in wet and dry and good grip from low temperature which is the key, around 220 bucks each from stuckey tyre services i did run slicks of a few different varieties but never could get good grip off the line..

There is another red Mini that runs 13" wheels as well meeni. It has been down at Morwell the last couple of events. "Edit" That was you then meeni now that I saw the pic of your car and number....

We will be hosting the Victorian Championship Round 1 on the first weekend of February, Sat to Sunday 2/3 which will be the last one to be held at our old track.... A bigger, better, longer new track will be up and running by the middle of next year...
