Did something myself!!

What do you reckon? What did i do wrong?

I was whingeing to a guy at work about how much fuel the mini eats, its idling problems and its constant flooding of the engine. He got into me and said go home and actually do something - get your book out and pull the carby apart - as he knows not alot about minis.
So this afternoon i got my mini manual out and started to poke and pull things. It real handy when the book says disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose, return spring, and the throttle and mixture control cables, and i don't know what any of them are, where they live or what they do. And in the book they have unclear pictures of them or they dont even label them!

So i pulled all the things that looked like they had to come off, off. and pulled the carby out. I had another carby off the other mini, and mine has oil, grease, fuel in/on every possible crack and area of surface, and the other one is nice and clean (so i put my dirty one back in). I compared the two float level things, and mine was buggered (or the other one was - but mine looked unhealthy even to a total n00b). The level of mine (i dont know what they do) was hanging much lower than the other one when put the way they would be in the car, When inversed, my float level could be pushed down to touch the top of the chamber lid, but the other one couldn't (I hope you understand). SO put i put in the other float level from the clean carby into my dirty one, did everything up and went for a spin.

I then had to fiddle with the choke and throttle cables to get them better, they never have been any good, but i have found a good place for them, and i hope the can stay and continue to run the smoothest i have ever had her running.

I shall now wait and see what this does about the poor fuel economy and the engine flooding when i get into some towns and traffic lights.

So thats my large story, But im excited because i actually do think i did something useful to the good of the mini.



The bonnet hook in thing is a real bugger isnt it :evil: . I impaled my head about 19 time on it doing this, but the hole have healed up and there are no pictures

Congratulations CAMAL I hope to follow in your footsteps putting in my webber and learning about that.

For now I have settled for removing the existing pump squirter thing Morris installed for the window washer and replacing it with a current style engine powered squirter thing.

gotta start somewhere I say :wink:

WELL DONE! the problem you described and the solution with the float level would have been exactly the right thing to do. You're supposed to hold the float bowl top upside down and have the float sitting perfectly horizontal.

2 potential reasons for this, the first is that some wally bent it into the wrong position, or the needle and seat is buggered. Want to know what the needle and seat is? get the old float bowl top, pull the pin that holds the float in place out. Take the float off and the long hollow brass "nut" is the seat, and the thingy inside it is the needle, the needle usually has a rubber tip, I bet that it is stuffed - this needle seals in the seat, and stops more fuel going into the bowl when the float pushes up against it

great work - expecting you to replace some ball joints next, you've gotta bash the crap out of something top really know what mini mechanicing is about :D

Was also going to say that on the test drive, it seemed different. I can dow downshift into any gear at anyspeed without tapping the accelerator. Putting it back into 3rd at 100 without tapping the go button was a real shock :shock:

good on ya!! you have every right to be proud of yourself for haveing a go, and getting a good result.. its not easy if you dont have someone to show you the basics. my dad bought me an old motor as a kid to show me how things worked, and im passing onwhat i know to danielle... i have the utmost respect for anyone learning on their own.. it must be very rewarding to succeed

woo hoo :!: another one with grease under their fingernails :D

if you get a new needle and seat (they always come as a set) get the one with the brass tip on the needle. i found that the ones with the rubber(nylon?) tip always stuff up after very little use.

it really is a good feeling to fix something
mechanical on a mini cos you can always feel
the results, especially when you do it yourself.

what was that about the changing down?? what did
it used to do if you didn't blip the accelerator??

Well
If too fast for the gear, it will just crunch, crunch, crunch, untill i stop.- any gear. So ill have to foll up to lights in neutral cruching away, trying to get it in. A bloke from work was ahead 200m away and it had a crunching fit, from 4th to 3rd at 70k's, Scared the crap out of him cause he thought it was his car :shock: . But its just random when it decided not to go im gear :? . Sometimes i could rip past the cruches and clunk it in, But when i didnt get any cruching, just gently changing, It would only go in gear at excessivly low speeds, which reduces my slowing capacity, but about 60-70%- seriously, so it was pretty important :wink: .

But its fixed for now???

damn - that sounds nasty.... might be the rod change mechanism (assuming you've got a rod change gearbox) and it occasionally gets itself tangled up caused by everything being worn out...
