Simple question, which is the best oil for both jobs, engine and gearbox and what is the best time to change both oil and filter, every 2,000 k's or so, or every 6 months. Its only a Sunny Sunday car, not every day driver.

I remembr someone suggesting a diesel engine oil, because its thicker, but I may have been on the turps when I heard that one.

David, Kmart (KMX) 20W50 weight is a good oil.
I am using it in my hot engine.
Keep changes consistent and regular - 3000km is good.

Penrite HPR30 is also a good oil which I have had no bad issues with - good all rounder.

depends what use your engine is getting, usually for a mini any 20-50 that has no friction modifiers will be fine, and like willy said, change it regularly.

I'd second the Penrite, I have that in my car at the moment, never had any issues with it.

I've never tried the Kmart oil, but the Doc likes it so it must be good ;)

I use the KMX, or Castrol Edge 25W/50.
I'm staying away from Penrite HPR30, I had cam wear issues with it in the 1310.

I'm going to be giving Havoline Premium a go. It is a 20W-50, SL/CF.

Pretty popular with mechanics around here, and a 20L drum will only set me back $60.

Overseas (USA) they are dropping zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (which protects our flat tappet cam lobes from wear) out of many modern oils. This is giving people grief in older engines.
I prefer to use oils no newer than SG rating in our 1950s vintage Mini engines.. :D

Caltex have a product called "Havoline Classic".

It is a 25W-50, SG/CD.

20L of that will set me back $68.

I agreeee with the good doc, earlier this year Penrite made changes to the additives in there oils (read the fine print ) and it now ranks right up there with castrol gtx with friction modifiers, not good for our old cars

Hi Dave,
is your engine an A+, or an old A series?

It's not so much in the fine print. Penrite HPR30 is SM rated. I would not use any SM rated oil in a Mini, lots of friction modifiers.

At the moment I tend to use Valvoline, it is still available in SF if you look hard. The SG stuff is fine too. I used to use Castrol GTX many moons ago but I steer clear of it now.

I've always used 20W50 in both Mini's without any obvious, oil related issues. I usually buy whats on special and have used most brands by now I think and haven't noticed a difference between them.

I once even used some cheap Big W 20W 50 oil in an emergency without a problem and have used that as top up oil also.
