Post subject:  guess the leak????

Hi i know this is a beginner question but i cant figure out what the heck is leaking. so far what i know is its oil only its coming from under the timing chain. the gasket on the timing chain cover and the round seal within have been changed recently and the round seal was not nicked when installing. the oil doesnt leak while the car is running but starts after turning the car off??? is it possible my engine is slightly off line to my gearbox and therefore the plate that is behind the timing chain is not sitting flush with the geatbox? any help or ideas are welcome cheers

May be the engine seal, when it is running the oil slinger removes the oil from the area, but once it is stopped it will pool around the seal. Either way you will need to re-do the seal and the gasket, even if it is the gasket.

You could wash it down with degreaser and then sit and watch it for a while to see where it is coming from, but you already know what needs to be done I think, and it ain't pretty...

yeah its hard to see up there ill try degrearser first cos i dont want to spend money on her at the moment if i can avoid it. but the other factor is the messy driveway which the mother might kill me over if i dont fix it soon

It's not so bad money wise, five dollars for the seal and a few dollars for the gasket, it will take a little while to get in there however...

P.S. Mums have awesome drip trays in the kitchen, they're usually found in the oven as roasting trays. Tell her it was greasy anyway.

:D time to get a drip tray for the drive........ you cant own a mini and expect it not to leak oil from some where!!

could be leaking form the corners of the half moon seal between the g/box and block which is behind the adaptor plate you are talking about. Clean it as mentioned by mick and check so you can be sure.....or get your friendly mini person to check for a 2nd opinion. (after you've cleaned it :D )
