Whilst swapping the ringrooted 850 engine out for the 998 from the basher as a temporary fix until i had time to rebuild the 850, i discovered that the gearbox casing has been rubbed by the drivers side universal jint at some time, and as i put it in i must have bumped it enough to crack the casing. i found this as i lay underneath putting the u bolts in and it started dripping oil on me

What should i do?

1. Pull it all back out and swap gearboxes? ( i may as well go for option 2 since there is almost as much work)
2. rebuild the 850 quicksmart, given that the borrowed garage i'm using for the swap runs out at the end of january?
3. Temporary fix using silicon or chemweld so i have a mobile car until i can rebuild the 850?
4. go and buy the Austin Cooper S here http://www.classicthrottleshop.com.au/ ?

Anonymous moderation means the agro that is built up towards the mods isn't aimed at an individual (fewer "Makk" attacks). Less stress for mods means less moderator "retirements".

Use devcon as a very temporary fix.
gearbox casing needs to be really clean though,
drain all oil and us lots of thinners.

yeah that is where i was heading makka. epoxy paste with aluminium in it. I have a nice big tin of acetone to clean it with, but i don't know when i can pick up the stuff. i take it that devcon is the epoxy paste stuff brickworx?

Either `Devcon' filled epoxy (U can get from bearing places etc) or good old Superstrength Araldite (NOT the 5 min stuff).
I once (back in `67) put an 1100S motor on an 850 box, cut 4 big holes in front for the rods to clear, araldited them over and painted it. Drove for 2 years and it never leaked a drop.
Araldite and epoxy were made for each other. As said above, clean it well first.

You can get devcon from places like trade supplies or repco etc...
make sure it's fuel resistant though.
most silicone based adhesives end up leaking worse than before.

Yes. Araldite is great stuff. It will flex a little. And unlike superglue, it gets stronger as it ages.

OK i might go the super strength araldite, which is effectively the same as the devcon but no metal in it. and i can probably get some today. Thanks Dr.

as far as the price of that cooper s goes, i think it is a bit much considering it is probably either a fake or has been incorrectly restored. i got a new book for christmas - Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S by John Parnell. There are a number of things like string pull door release and lack of heater that don't match up with what is in the books. Although if it was an export one that may be correct, but how many were exported from the uk in right hand drive eh? still i like the colour!
and the price is much better than the $70k he wants for the porsche 356

Put all the gearbox bits in another casing. Simple, well i thought so when i started to do it.... Anyone got another gearbox mick can throw under the 998? best and easiest fix i reackon.

Aaron, thanks mate, but like i said that is as much work as rebuilding the 850 engine and gearbox anyway. The 998 is only meant to be a temporary fix until i have time to do that.
