Yes they can be welded, TIG is preferred.
But if it's an old 3 synchro I'd use it as an excuse to upgrade to a Mini-K or Mk2 S box. You then get closer ratios, and 1st gear synchro.

I have an old remote gearbox housing which has a hole in it, caused by the diff outputs, can this be welded up or do I need another housing? |

It will be easier to get another casing and have things swapped - you would have to strip it to weld it anyway. I saw with my own eyes that Steve at Brickworkz (in South Oz ) has a pile of empty used gearbox casings. Ask him for a quote. While I am at it - thanks for the hospitality Steve - it was appreciated

I once bought an engine and gearbox out of a crashed clubman. It turned out the bottom of the sum got a crack in it during the crash. I took the whole power unit to a specialist aluminium welder and he just flipped the whole lot upside down and welded it up. He even rebuilt the broken off fins in weld metal. Tim |

nope its not an 850 box, its a 4 synchro remote box, just that apart from the hole, the housing looks perfect ie no scuff marks underneath it. So it would look good (wouldnt be able to see the welded up bit unless the engine was out..... Just trying to keep it all looking good for the rebuild.... Unless someone has a really good housing they want to get rid of... |

If it's cracked where I think (in that thin wall at the back) it'll TIG weld up fine. I've seen it done with gears still in.

Darren, May be worth asking Clive at Hammerworks ( http://www.thehammerworks.com.au/ next door to Al at MiniCentral) if he'll zap it up for you. . .after being next to a Mini business for so long, he's starting to gain a certain 'affinity' for repairing Mini parts. . . .he can be a grumpy old turd at times but there doesn't seem to be much he cant do metal fabrication/repair wise. . . |
