I've decided that I don't want this "Extra Option" on my mini. Im not really sure where the leak is coming from. I've some of the ol stains on the engine and took a photo after driving it. Here's some pics to help determine where the source. Pic taken from front passenger side 
Top shot on passenger side of the inlet manifold 
After a 20min drive it will leak this much oil

looks correct to me - much easier way of checking your oil than the dipstick

hmmm might be coming from the side covers on the rear of the motor?, they tend to leak abit i know mine use the pour oil out |

In your picture of the front passenger side is the oil just building up there or is it running down from above that? If it is from above. My guesses would be to look for a timing cover gasket or seal leak. Also look at the backing plate that sits behind the timing chain. These often leak between the block and the plate. Also your engine "back" covers that cover the pushrods and cam followers. They are really side covers but on a mini they are on the back. They sometimes have a neoprene-like seal or cork gasket that can leak. Also the O rings or felt washers that sit under them depending on your car can leak - if you buy new o rings get some new cups at the same time too. Backing plates arent too hard. The timing cover seals and gaskets although not hard to change is a bigger job as the radiator has to come off. If you have a timing chain rattle too you may aswell change the chain and if you are doing that even if the plate that sits behind that isnt leaking I would put a fresh gasket on that too. While you have it all apart you may aswell do it all right and do it once. While your there check your cam thrust bearing for wear these arent too expensive and easy to replace. While your radiator is out - check your water pump too. I would wash the engine down and take it for a 20 minute run so you can get a better look at where it is coming from. That looks like a fairly significant leak. If you cant see try to borrow a hoist for 10 minutes and have a look. Cheers Matt |

from the 1st pic I cant find any oil seeping down above that area, its more like from that join |

Timing cover seal it looks like to me. From where the droplet is. The oil gets on back of the pulley/harmonic balancer and then gets flung around.

Mine leaked like that. It was (suprise) the breather on the back on the crank case. It actually had a little hole at the bottom (where you cant see it) I found by looking heaps. So check there if you can... Also, my fuel pump has a spacer in it, the gaskets were shot and it was leaking there too.... Good luck. Pete. |

I just wiped it clean again and this area is wet with oil again

As I said before, that is directly below the timing cover oil seal. These go hard with old age and heat, then seal no more. If pulling the cover off to fix, I'd check how worn the timing chain is too. Not much extra work to change it. And they are cheap.

Hi Razor, Did you ever find where that oil leak was from. I have an oil leak in exactly the same spot. It is definetly not the timing cover seal or gasket. On mine it appears to be coming from the speedo cable where it attaches to the g/box Thanks Felix |

it attaches to the g/box Thanks Felix There is a tiny oil seal in there - just changed mine as the old one was dry and hard and you could see the gap around the spindle shaft. Got it from Mini King #42 goes inside the threaded section of #43 and is about 1 cm in diameter with a 4mm hole like a tiny wheel bearing seal with a spring in it
