Post subject:  Brake disk shields

Hi all.
Just getting around to overhauling a set of 8.4 discs & hubs I bought a while ago. Unfortunately, I have only one disk shield.
Do I need to source another one, or can they safely be deleted?

Thanks. Scotty.

They're not really necessary , there is a very remote chance of getting a stone wedged between the caliper and the disc rotor but it's a very slim chance .

You are more likely to get a stone stuck in there if you leave them on.
They may be useful in UK where they salt the roads, here in Oz I reckon bin em. All they do is restrict disc cooling.

They're only held on by thin tabs that always break and then they rattle worse than anything else on a mini. Unfortunately they are a roadworthy item - so I now just keep a set at home to put on for such occasions.

Only disadvantage I've noticed when not running them is that you can get more water under the pads. After a drive along a wet freeway for a while I've found the first (non) brake application was a bit of a wake-up  . I'm use to it know and have developed the habit of giving myself enough space to give the brakes a couple of quick dabs first to get the water film off the pad surface.

 Sounds like a good reason to leave them on to me. :?

My passenger one cracked on the joint and dad and i welded it back up (it rattled like a bitch).
