Prob so the boot door doesnt create a vacuume, suction etc when opening and closing (if the seal works as designed).

Also so puppy dogs can breath when "accidently" locked in the boot by ratbag children.

Just looked at my Mini's, both only have a singular hole in the middle, about 2 inch in diametre (guessitimate).

They are most likely for a single oval speaker for an AM radio. In those days car speakers didn't have tweeters so having the bar in the middle would have little effect on the sound quality of AM radio. I remember seeing many minis with a chrome mesh speaker grille over that spot.

My rear parcel shelf masonite board has holes in it with serated edges (could be trimmed / pushed out if you wanted too) that line up with the two holes shown in the above photo - it also has the two holes in the rear parcel shelf panel - ventilation sounds like a good theory, but why go perforate the masonite board and then go and cover it with black vinyl? What about some sort of seat belt location point for rear belts? If a plate was welded / riveted under the parcel shelf at these 2 points I reckon they would be pretty near where the clubbys have them mounted.
Food for thought anyway!!
