Post subject:  A+ and magic wand

Now here is the dilemma (such a nice dilemma to be in!).

A+ 1275 with magic wand is what I need to end up with.

Can anything be done to the A+ gearbox to allow for the magic wand. Say a Mini K van/Clubman van diff housing?

...or do I need to use say a Mini K box with the Mini K van/Clubman van diff housing? Can I put an A+ on that box in the first place?

im doing the same thing at the moment, i got a 4 synchro box and put a magic wand housing on the back, and putting the a+ gears in that, you have to change the idler gear i think

I was under the impression that 4 synchro 'boxes and 3 synchro 'boxes are not interchageable? As in you can't put 4 synchro gears in a 3 synchro box. :?

mini k box housing is a four synchro but you can change the gear selector housing.
its true you cant put 4 synchro gears in a 3 synchro box.
im going for the magic wand shift for looks (and i like the feel more then remote shifts) but want to retain my a+ gears

I'm putting a Magic Wand diff housing on a 4 synchro box. The drive shaft holes have to be right as these were line bored on assembly but if you play around you can get lucky (did I just say that  )

Mine has a fingernail detectable step on one side but I'm told by Matt the Miniman that if I take out the dowels and bolt it up she'll be sweet.

GR says the same, but IMO it pays to do it up with the diff out, then measure the roundness... as it could be out horizontally as well as vertically.

Done all that and it's looking good all round ( pun intended)

Fit the A+ engine to the A series box using A+ Primary, idler and input gear. This is my plan for the Traveller. I'll be using a 4 synchro Mini K van gearbox in it to keep the wand.

Or perahps you could drastically shortent a rod change to fit?

I looked at that a while ago , it's possible with an ultrashort rod (couple of inches) to bring the lever out the magic wand hole but you can't lift such a long lever to get it into reverse so you either need to break that bit of the mechanism or find one that's very worn which you can force through the reverse lockout .

Just grind it off, you don't need it. The late model Moke (post 1980) used a really short rod change as standard. And stop calling them Mini K van boxes, they're Moke boxes. :D

I would rather a 4 synchro A series box than an A+, which has crap ratios.
On an A series one, the Mk2 S 22G1040 cluster gear and 1st motion shaft/gear drop straight in.

Also bear in mind, you can get a later model 4 synchro remote box, and fit a magic wand gearshift and adaptor sandwich plate from an early magic wand Clubby van. No change of diff housing required, but gear shift is a slightly different shape (hardly noticeable).

I have the complete set up (inc gearstick, adaptor plate, selector rod, bolts etc) from early clubby van or Moke to convert the remote 4 synchro box to magic wand for sale. PM me if interested.

That would be the same that is in my Mini K van? I'll probably be using it.
