i hope not seeing as the gearbox was rebuilt and the place i had it done at is no shut down
it was fine this morning with no signs of anything being wrong

finally got the mini registered this morning, but this afternoon something has stuffed up and i can only get 3rd with the car running, i can put it into 4th with the car turned off and its in gear when i start it, but there is no 1st or 2nd. with the car turned off i can move the shifter though the usual H pattern. its a remote change box, im thinking it might be linkages at the back of the gearbox wont be able to check it till tomorrow when the engine cools. anyone got other ideas on what could be the problem? |

If you're lucky its just a problem with the roll pins in the linkage. I had something similar once and it was caused by the intermediate gear having stuffed its bearing and flogged the hole out. Tim |

cant see it being a clutch adjustment prob seeing as the clutch works once its in gear. with engine off and putting the selector where 1st or 2nd should be and starting the car i get nothing, ill be checking the linkages tomorrow morning, engine is still a bit to warm to work on plus i have to be at work in half an hour. |

Mate it sounds like the selector rail bolt has come loose and dropped out in the gearbox. The locknut works loose on remote boxes and falls out, so you guess what you have to do now 
Rod change boxes had a roll pin instead of a bolt,locknut and shakeproof washer. If you do have to pull it apart and fix, use locktite on the bolt with the locknut. |

If you can get gears with the engine turned off and not when it is running it would most likely be the clutch. Telltale would be if the clutch takes up down near the floor. It should take up about 2/3 of the way out. Poor clutch adjustment can cause drag on the synchros which can stop it going into gear with the engine running. It could be a combination of clutch and selectors. With luck it will be the splined linkages on the top of the diff housing as they are the easiest to check and tighten (they aren't easy but at least you don't have to take the engine out). Pete |

im not sure if it is selecting 1st and second but i can move the shifter through the normal H pattern, if i have it in 1st or second theoretically and start the car it isnt in gear when i release the clutch it does nothing |

i checked the linkages and still no 1st or second so this looks like what has happened. anyone want to buy a 66 deluxe? i dont have somewhere to keep the car while i take engine out again, have posted a wanted ad to see if i can find a complete engine/gearbox but if i cant find something at a reasonable price ill be selling all my mini bits which is something i dont really want to do:( |
