yesterday took the car for a run, and on the way home about 200m from home i started to lose throttle response and the car started to 'gurgle' and then lurch foreward...

thought initially it was electrical, but ive just recently replaced a heap of the electrics (points, condenser, coil, altenator, rotor button, plugs, leads). checked all of my usual causes of problems (coil leads all attached, dizzy rotor button)

then had a sift through here with the search function and thought...oh well maybe my dellorto needs a tune-up (running rich at the moment) but for it to change from running awesome, to turn to absolute crap was a bit odd :?

i then researched on here further and read up on an old post describing the jets can sometimes get clogged with gunk/crap and cause this problem..also that sometimes it will clear itself given some time..

took it on an MOCQ run today thinking that the run might do a bit of good.....
how wrong i was:
got to the cooroy classic car show and the car was really jumping around when accelerating even when only slightly and was like missfiring (brum, br, br, br ,br bruuum, br, bruuum :? make sence?? )
anyway i decided id leave a little earlier then the others and make my way to our next meeting point slowly and easy, but about 5 mins away from the show, and with the foot fully burried, i was topping out at 60km/h on a flat (car jumping wildly). figured nah ill limp it to a nearby place and get a tow home (ginger factory for the locals). met with the folks who were heading to the car show anyway, so i didnt wait too long. fitted up the tow strap and got a 'lift' home, sept on the highway about 2km from home, i let too much slack in the 'snatch-em' strap and ran over it (getting it tied in the left and right hand wheels) and then the heat from rubbing on the tyres just melted the snatchem and snapped  (another thing i now add to the 'i owe the parents list') so i figured id still just try to limp home and made it (30km/h on some hilly parts).

i checked the plugs orriginally yesterday and they were mildly covered in some carbon, but i just removed em now and numbers 1-4 were all a lot worse (1 worst through to 4 least)

im just stuck on what to do, other then take the car down to the mini specialist and just let them do their thing, or i might take the carby off to clean it up (but i dont know exactly where the jets are (if thats the prob))
 i dunno what the prob is so can someone help me?
carby?? perhaps a bad batch of fuel?? clogged fuel filter? fuel starvation to the carb? something else

Check the plastic gauze fuel filter inside the carb inlet (if still there) isn't clogged with gunk.
I threw it away and fitted a separate Purolator glass filter instead.

hey doc is that the one on the very top of the carby? :?
anyway i took that off to finally find the jets..
also was looking at this website about dellorto's pretty helpful so far.
http://www.powerpage.dk/tuning_teori_8dellorto.aspx

i cleaned up the jets breifly and found the jets (on the right hand side in particular), had some crap in the holes that ive now got out. havent tried to start it again.

also my jets are numbered
7772.7 (idler i think
7850.3

and i think it said that one of the jets was too rich for my engine (1100cc) in that guide...any theories?

btw is there anything else i should be cleaning with the carby (to some extent, im a mechanical newbie  ) but i really am keen to try to solve this problem myself rather then pay some mechanical monkey to do it if i can... 8)
cheers

Yes it's the one inside the fuel banjo at top.
I strip the carb, clean in Nulon carb and throttle body cleaner, blow out with air and reassemble.
The repair kit I use is a Fuel Miser DE-250, available from Repco etc.
Make sure the jets in each pair (eg mains) are same size.

7772.7 is the emulsion tube. My Weber/Dellorto book says that works in both 998 and 1098. I use 7772.6 in 1275 and up.

If interested in tuning Dellortos or sidedraft Webers I recommend the book, "How to build and power tune Weber and Dellorto carburettors", by Des Hammill.

Sounds like you need to run a fuel filter before the carb. Are you sure the idle mixture screws on both sides are event? if 1 is worste than 4, it may be too rich on once side and just right on the other.

Also don't DUMP the pedal to the floor from low revs, this will make any dellorto equiped car go brbrrbrbrbrrbrbbrrrrrrooom, rather than vrrrrrrooooom, if you know what I mean. Pogressively stomp on the accelerator as the revs grow.

Sounds like it is carb related as I was about to say you might have a wet plug but if they are all burning then electricals are ok.

Cheers doc
when i pull the carby off (tommorow probably to clean NOT disassemble  ) will this put out my tuning of it, even if i avoid all tuning screws??

yeah im going out tommorow to put down an order on that book i think :)

Lillee-
i am really not too sure about the tuning on the carb...id be venturing into uncharted waters :?

yeah ive learnt to drive with a 'smooth' action of the accelerator, not like the way some of my mates drive (flat to floor, clutch, flat to floor!!!! )

well thats it basically...

.spent yesterday night till 11pm tinkering around with things giving a little bit of a clean out
then went out today and got that Nulon carby cleaner doc suggested (good stuff 8) ) and basically did as much as i could without tinkering with the tuning of the carby, or disassembling the buggger.... and today i just thought it should be allright or at least a LITTLE better then it was...but no....still runs like $hit
20 mins ago just called the local mini place booked it in to let them do their thing and i cant even drive to the place cause its jerking and lack of power means that i top out at 40kmh....ON THE FLAT! and to get to the place i have to travel up several hills.......so ill be on tow to the place
i also checked the points with the old man today to make sure it wasnt something stupid id missed...and the dizzys internals were sort of moving a little bit, and the point gap initially was around .008  adjusted it to roughly 20 thou...and still the same problems
so i dunno we'll let the mini place do their thing and ill update tommorow hopefully

Highly recomended if starting with sidedraugth carbs for the first time.

By the way if a glass purolator filter can't be found a regular plastic one from any parts place will do just as well.

Oh and check the low tension lead to the coil. Mine had the crimping on the end rattle loose and create alternate missfiring at high revs a few years back.
