Post subject:  Hypothetical suspension question

I've seen various threads about standard and competition hydro bumpstops and read that the comp ones act as a sort of progressive cushion when the suspension is compressed past a certain point . What I'm wondering is would it be possible/beneficial to modify them to suit a dry suspended mini to stiffen the suspension further when it's being really pushed hard ?

A rear sway bar would give much better results?

Yeah , I've got one of them to go on one of the cars as well but they look poserish on a mini

benefits I don't know, but it wouldn't be super hard to put them on a dry car...

the fronts are easy, they install on the top suspension arm, either using a hydro top arm, or putting the bracket on a dry arm. Ditch the bump stop that is attached to the dry subframe obviously

the rears would be harder, as the bump stop mounts aren't there on the radius arms of a dry car, and the brake lines run across there (I think) I'd say you'd need to use hydro rear arms, and modify them to mount the damper - Dr Mini says you can cut off the hydro spring mount, and drill/tap the rear of the stub axle to take a bolt to go through the damper

a sway bar actually wouldn't give the same type of results - maybe similar - but not the same. A sway bar won't prevent front to rear pitching, rear end squat under acceleration, front end squat under braking.... as both sides will compress together, not putting any torsion on the sway bar....

I use competition bump stops on my hydro car to cut down the pitching under acceleration

care to expand on your thoughts there Chong?

Not need on a dry mini.
Probably why the don't make comp bump stops for dry cars.

I can't see what they would do that your spring is not already doing? i.e. progressively stiffer spring rate.

Was that a sarcastic question, Simon?

My source could be wrong but I was told they were very similar to what we got orriginally here while the later developed rubber cones (mk iv onwards) got softer and softer .

If I were putting new ones in, i'd get those comp ones for the front and leave the standard 'Aussie' cones in the rear.

The instructions with the comp hydro rear bumpstops do give details how to fit them to dry cars.

I could say a rear sway bar is not needed on a dry car either, some of the fastest Nb racers run without.
