fit it after you've painted the engine Carter. If you leave it in
and mask it up you don't get a good coverage behind it

Depends how you feel. I just painted around mine with a brush and I think it turned out pretty good (pulled off some stuff from around it though).

I think mine came up all right. If you have your car off the road (waiting to get registered) or are pulling it out anyway or have the engine out, I would pull it out and paint it separatly.

If your going to do it do it properly, take off the carby & manifold, fuelpump, dizzy, starter, radiator etc etc, give it a good wash down with degresser & a high pressure cleaner, get the grease & muck out of everywhere.

Give the engine 2 good coats of paint including the gearbox.

Paint the radiator, starter motor black etc etc

A little bit more effort goes a long way.

Should be enough, if not get some more, whack it on.

What colour are you painting it?

I use White Knight Alpine green hammertone, it's in a spray can & it's almost identicle to the factory Cooper S green, available from Bunnings & Mitre 10 nice & easy to use, goes on & sticks well.

Painted the engine in mine the other day.
Actually painted it with brush rather than spray can.
Removed alternator, starter motor, dizzy, leads, plugs, rocker cover.
If you own a clubman, remove the front grille section. Makes life so much easier.
I've done a red block, sliver gear box and head and a gloss black rocker cover.
Touched up radiator with some gloss black too. Looks a million dollars.
Only down side to doing it in the car is you cant paint the back of the engine.
Have some fun, take ya time, its worth the effort for sure.

As all above have said

However, has your engine been chemically dipped - ie is it bare metal ????

If it has, it may need a light spray with a can of etch primer to make the paint stick to the metal.

g'day the engine is out not in the car......it is also painted but is showing signs of age.....it has new rings bearing cam and will have a reconditioned head. so i shall just do a good degreaser and clean up and then spray....what ya say about that
