This may seem stipid to some but what should I fill my cooling system up with?
Straight coolant, straight water or a certain ratio of each?

This may seem stipid to some but what should I fill my cooling system up with? Straight coolant, straight water or a certain ratio of each?

Coolant will come either pre-mixed or not. Depends what ya buy to whether you mix it up. |

It all depends on the coolant. The cheap stuff you use straight (because you are paying for 2/3rd's water. The good stuff you use a mix of about 2/3rd water to 1/3rd coolant depending on the brand of coolant. (it could be half and half, it could be 10 to 1, etc.) You don't want to run straight water. It will turn brown and sludgy and soon block the radiator. |

I always run distilled water and the castol corrsion inhibutor additive. I never run glycol type coolants as they are conductive. |

I wondered about that - my engine has a harmonic balance and carries a good tune. (sic!) |

So is water if you throw enough crusty block jibbers in it. Only a problem if you have stray currents from say a thermo fan however or you mix your inhibitors by brand. http://www.are.com.au/feat/techtalk/straycurrent.htm a good site all round actually... |

Have to agree with the Bloke on this one, glycol actually makes water less efficient at transfering heat as well. |

I run Nulon glycol in the 1360, mixed 1:3 ratio with Sydney tap water, it cools fine, doesn't rust and lasts me for years.
If it ain't broke.......

I must be doing something wrong.... I just use straight tap water... doesn't go brown, and never gets hot |

I can only highly recommend Red Line Waterwetter&Inhibitor-used with distilled water. |
