Hi, I hope someone can help me, Ive got a 998 '76 clubby with headers and high lift rockers. She was playing up earlier in the week with a really weak spark and was running rich, so I replaced the coil, condenser, points, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor button. The spark is excellent now, and alot leaner, but then she was misfireing pretty badly, after some timing adjustments etc its running better, but still has a misfire. And from the look of it she has a HS2 carb on it, is this right for the year model? and is it possible its not getting enough air? Please help im pretty much stuck now, Cheers! |

I believe it should have an HS4 originally. An HS2 is perfectly fine though on a 998 and won't cause the problem you are encountering (unless it's buggered). |

yeah I was sure it was ment to have a HS4 on it... Nah running it richer didnt help either, the jet assembly at the bottom looks a tad bent, this has only happend since playing up on tuesady, ive had her for a few months now and has been running excellent untill this week |

if you feel that its airflow - try running without the air filter and see if that evens it out. |

I tried running it with out the filter this afternoon, but no difference unfortunatly. Also if I take off the oil cap on the rocker-cover she runs really rough and eventualy stalls, is this normal? I cant remember that happening on my other mini... |

Your Mini must have a PCV system fitted, where the carby or manifold pulls a vacuum on the crankcase when running. When you take rocker cover off, it sucks air and runs lean.... |

have you checked for oil in the dash pot of the carbie? pull the plunger out for a look see.....very low or no fluid in the carb can cause a missfire/flat spot or even stop the car from running as the only thing that would be pushing the piston in the carb down is the spring in it and it aint that strong. when you look into it (the carbie) you'll see what looks like a step (from where the plunger came from its actually the top of the piston in the carb) the oil should be somewhere around there, if not get some fluid to rectify it. best stuff ive found to use is penrite damper oil comes in a small bottle and is green in colour. other people say trans fluid (dex 3 i think), its ok but i think the penrite stuff works better.
