Heyas,

I topped up the motor with oil last night and today theres a leak coming out of the side cover (not out the gasket of the side cover or the bolts holding the cover on but out the middle of the cover out onto shaft that connects to the pot joint housing) the motor has not been run in over 3 years so is there a seal of some sort in there that might have gone hard and need replacing??

The driveshafts are out so i tried to hit the pot joint housing off with a block of wood and a hammer but it wont budge, and there isnt a great deal of room, even with the motor out of the car. So are there any tricks people know of?? Or do i just have to keep hitting away till she pops off??

belt a wedge between the pot joint and the diff housing - big screwdriver, the end of a pry bar, something like that...

I avoid the prying method since my mumbo screwdriver snapped. I always drift the pot off, passengers side is a bit harder but persevere as it will come off eventually. If the engine is out of the car it is probably harder as you can't get at it from underneath.

I use a thin `Gedore' 1" open end spanner ground out to 1-3/8", and the sides ground to a wedge point. It looks like 2 cold chisels.
2 whacks with a BFH and it's off, never damaged one yet. :lol:

I made my own version of service tool 18G1240 (the tool shown in the image above) and it's the best thing ever! Just slide it behind the pot joint,one sharp tap and off it pops.
I just used a rectangular piece of 8mm steel plate and cut a wide slot in the top with an angle grinder, Then welded another small piece to it for a fulcrum. Took maybe 15 minutes to make, but makes it a very easy job.
