Yes a 72 should have reversing lights, it is one of the ADRs introduced in 72

Ok....done some work on this car and it's a remote gear change. I don't recall seeing a switch on the casting where you would attach the wires for the reversing lights, so perhaps this car was manufactured prior to the ADR's that stipulated that the rear indicators came on when reverse gear was selected.

Does any-one know the month in '72 when the ADR's were put in place.

Louis, have a look at the compliance plate - under the bonnet somewhere - and it will show the month as well as the year of manufacture. If it's before the ADR's were changed in 1972, you will be in the clear.

Anybody, please feel free to correct me.

Is it a remote or a rod change?

Remotes have the spot for one on the front of the gearbox casing, rod changers have a switch fitted to the change mechanism.

the car being a 10/72 will need reversing ligjhts as the ADRs came into force Feb 72 along with the headrests on the seats, the car should also be fitted with twin filament bulb holders in the rear blinkers

are you sure about the reverse lights being 1972 as my 73 S does not have them :? nor does the remote gearbox have the switch and one more telling factor is that the tail lights are not equipped with the required correct fittings to be able to take a dual filament bulb in the indicators and nor is the wiring loom :? :?

There are very few original cars out there that have the original gearbox fitted let alone not been hit up the back :D , and yes I am sure about the reverse lights, have a look at any 72 model car Holden, Ford or any Jap or euro box and they will have reversing lights

I have a copy of ADRs that says that ADR1 (Reversing Signal Lamps) was introduced on 1/1/72.

Every Mini gearbox is capable of being fitted with reversing lights. Even the 3 syncro was fitted with them at one stage.
