Post subject:  Dash/Electrical question
OK at the inspection today they pin me on a red light on the dash that stay on all the time, right under the speedo. They say it's a hand brake light but i have my doubt.

Also i canot get a temperature reading???

Any idea :?

the ignition light is located on the bottom right of the speedo, and if it is staying on it means that your system isnt charging properly.

As far as i know minis didnt have a hand brake light.....or maybe LS's did, but dont think any others did.

Correct me if i'm wrong

As caponix said, most likely your ignition light. Brake fail/ Park brake features were not introduced until late 70's and both these lights were inbuilt in the top dash panel. It seems to me that a lot of these RWC guys have it in for us poor mini people :evil: Most of the time they are not aware of what features were standard for vehicles of that era and also they don't believe older cars should be allowed on the roads hence the failure rate.

what mini do you have? ie what year?
no temperature - i would check the connection at the front of the head, just under and to the left the thermostat housing. thats the temp sender, check that the connection is good and that the mating surfaces are clean. following that, the back of your dash is the next thing to look at. undo the mounting screws and take a looksy at the wiring behind the dash to make sure theres no loose, frayed or burnt wires

Ok this is where i am at now.

Think the red light indicate no charge. When i turn the key all the light should go on right? But when i turn the key i have OIL, that red light but no ALT light. Looking at the wireing diagram i should have 3 wire in the alternator, but i have only 2. The only wire i have left are a green one (2 Wire to 1 connector) and a green/blue or black one. Those two are not matching the diagram, i am very puzzle :?

Any help would be appreciated.

green wires are usually associated with auxilliary circuits such as wipers, washers, heater fan etc. If they are in the vicinity of the alternator they would most likely be for the reversing switch on the gearbox or the wiper washer motor.

I owned a 77model 998 LS, now own a 78 1275LS, and two 77 model minis. All have handbrake lights and brake failure warning lights on the dash panel above the speedo etc. My friend's 76 model doesn't, must have been a 77model onwards thing.

The 2 wires on your alternator will probably be. B+ charge wire, and switched 12v field wire which comes from ur ign switch, through charge light on ur dash to the alternator.

Can you give me more info. I think me alternator shoul have only 2 wire connected to it as it had the internal regulator. Would the red light indicate a faulty alternator

One would think so. Or at least say that the system is not charging for what ever reason. An auto elec would sort a fault like out quick smart.

ive got a 78 S, and it has both brake fail hand hand brake lights set into the dash as described above.

the red light you are talking about is the alt light, and indicates no charge. check all your electrics for burnt/frayed wires, shorts, and blown fuses. an easy way to narrow the cause of the problem is to take one of your fuses out and see if the light is still on. if it is, then the mischeivous little bugger is on that circuit. if not, its on the other circuit. this will halve the places you need to look :)

hmm i just realised when i posted.....your cars a clubby not a roundnose (so has different dash clusters)
is the ignition light also on the bottom right hand side? :oops: i was assuming it was a roundy's speedo.

yeah doesnt the ignition light staying on, mean that the altenator/generator is not putting out a charge? (my auto electrician sorted my altenator out)
temp guage problem, i got no idea sorry :?

edit: yeah an auto electrician would sort things out for you easiest
