Post subject:  Feul Pump - easy job?
Hey everyone,

Just looking for opinions on replacing a fuel pump while the engine is in the car? Hard job? Any tips or tricks to it?

NB its a 998 in a clubbie.

Any comments would be appreciated.. :lol:

If you're replacing it with an electric one it is certainly do-able with engine in the car.
Mechanical is harder, but still possible.

just replace the mechanical one, it's not impossible. Simply undo the 2 bolts, slip it out and put the new one in, do up the bolts.

PS. That's after removing extractors, if they are in the way , and a whole not of swearing, bandaids and puddles of fuel on the ground... :lol:

Replacing with another mechanical pump is no problem, you'll just have to remove the carb & exhaust to gain access. Would be preferable to converting to electric, as it is cheaper and less messing about.

Also, i take it 3psi is the correct pressure, its going to a single 1.5 SU.

Virtually any spares shop (repco, supercheap, autoOne) will have an electric fuel pump. Unsure of the price exactly.

A couple of things though -

1. The maximum fuel pressure an SU can handle is 2.5 psi - any more and you will exert more pressure than the needle and seat can ahndle and you will flood the carby.

2. Most of these pumps are designed to push fuel and not suck it so it needs to be mounted up near the rear sub frame under the car. You will need to cut the fuel line and plumb the pump into the line. Dont mount it up on the firewall. It won't suck enough fuel consistantly.

3. You will need to run a power wire down to the pump under the car. It needs to be a switched power - that is; it only has power when the ignition is on.

Ermm I would say it was more messing about... run wires, cut hoses... mount pump...

You're just slack. It's one wire, the hoses are rubber, and can be cut through easily
and mounting it isn't rocket science either.

Further to my above post - a 3psi Facet will work fine - correct pressure is 2.5 psi but it copes with 3 psi. It wont work with 5 or 7 psi
