I have decided to get rid of some of my accumulated crap so that I can fit my Cooper S in a garage instead of parking it in the grass and one of the things that must go is a Austin Montego. The Montego is basically shagged but it does have one good feature, it has a 1275 A+ engine. But the downside is that underneath the 1275 A+ is a pressed metal sump. Alongside the 1275 A+ is a Volkswagen 4 speed gearbox like the early VW Golf used. Between the gearbox and the gearstick are the vaguest linkages ever invented. It has the same amount of slack in neutral as it does in 1, 2, 3, 4 and reverse. So the reality is that the car is stuffed, the gearbox is useless but if you want a 1275 A+ for a Morris Minor or a Spridget this could be the car for you. |

Mike_Byron wrote: Mike I suppose the first thing is to find out if a Spridget flywheel can be made to fit the Montego crank. The Montego uses a weird flywheel and clutch setup. The Pressure plate bolts to the crank and the flywheel bolts to the pressure plate. I am interested in it for a spridget purpose - where do we g from here ??? Mike ![]() It has a Lucas electronic dizzy and a HIF44 carby. It runs but has not been on the road for a long time. |

So you can make a BMW motorcycle head fit an A series but you can't make a Spridget flywheel fit a Montego crank? What sort of LazyGoodForNothingSmartArseKnowItAllBackYardMiniMechanic are you? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

morris 1100,,, you should know me better than that by now ![]() ![]() It`s just that the montego/maestro cranks have a very much longer/thicker snout/flange where the flywheel faces up, but there`s not enough meat behind it to simply machine it back to make it line up with the spridget set up. it`s just not worth the effort to try such a conversion Both the Bimmer Twinky cyl head conversion & the turbo alloy V8 conversions are pretty easy in comparison Have you got the montego/maestro inlet manifold still??? still a pic of it up here for everyone to have a laugh at will you??? ![]() ![]() & i am serious about the con rods & cyl head, send them up to me & i`ll send you a drivers side engine steady braket for your 1100 ![]() |
