Whilst pondering actually doing something towards starting the resto on my van, I began to wonder how old it is. It has a "Morris" plate beside the radiator with "Car Number- MAV4-118***". Does anyone have a clue what year model it is?

The wiper motor says 66, the radiator says 64 but they are both Australian whilst the car is english.

Cheers,

Scott

Does the plate have the original engine number on it as well ? Might be able to trace it from that . Does it have a smooth roof or fluted ?

You could always get a heritage certificate as discussed in this thread only yesterday.

The chassis prefix is British, but it sounds like it has had varions parts replaced over the years which mask the original year. :(

A Heritage Certificate is your best bet.

The plate says "Engine number- see engine" smart ass poms! :) The roof is flat and the front seat brackets are the odd flimsy metal ones fixed to the box chanel thingo. I will try to get some pics up later.

Yes I will probably ask the minister for finance about the Heritage Certificate.

Its an early one, '60 or '61 I reckon. Have you tried the glass dating method? It works for cars with British Triplex glass in the windows.

Quote:
Dating your car by its windows - based on the original compiled by Neil Cairns.

MG's made in the 1950's to the late 1970's can be dated by the 'TRIPLEX CODE' etched into the toughened glass. My 75 GT has Sicursive side glass but a Triplex heated back-light with a code that fits the date of build of the car. This also works for any other make using TRIPLEX glass.

Note that it dates the GLASS so is only an indication of the cars age assuming the glass is original.

If you are not quite sure of the year of your car but the decade is known just look for two dots in the TRIPLEX logo on the glass.

One dot above T R E or X gives the quarter of the year the glass was manufactured:
T = Jan Feb March
R = April May June
E = July Aug Sept
X = Oct Nov Dec.
but which year?

Nine letters make the word TOUGHENED one dot below a letter gives the year of the decade:
T = 1
O = 2
U = 3 and so on.
However if you see no dot the year is zero.

Say your car is a 1950's MG then

TRiplEX TOUGHENED with one dot over the 'R' in Triplex and the other under the last 'E' in Toughened indicates 'April/May/June 1958'.

In regard to the Minister for Finance, don't forget to tell her that a heritage certificate will increase the final value of the car.

Thanks very much Tim, the window dating puts it as April- June 1961.
