What are peoples suggestions for painting the underside of the body and in the wheel wells?

I was thinking a bituminous (is that the correct word) paint. My father used it on his Austin's. We carry the Ormonoid stuff here at work.

on more "showish" sort of cars at work we used to used "under body shultz" but thin it down and use
it through an old primer gun, gives it a nice smooth finish which is paintable over yet still being elastic

i paddled tar onto all the big joints, and sprayed body shultz over the lot, leave it for a few days before painting with thick primer so the thinner dosent melt the tar.

I don't care if it's black or whatever... Just wanna stop the rust and have it be as durable as possible. If it helps deaden the sound, that would be great, too!

Sounds like a fun job Scotty. Spray applicator or brush?
The stuff I used last time took ages to harden and I failed (miserably) trying to replicate the original finish. Gotta be some success stories out there............

i used some stuff from supercheap, looks good i reckon. heres some pics.... id have to go out to the shed to check on what its called but i think its body deadener or something, its a tar/turps based thing i beleive, dont know how good it is at anything but looking new yet though. if you dont want brush marks you can dab the brush after you have spread it on and it looks a bit better, i just go lazy lol

I used Ormonoid on the inside of my Mini last time ( Dad said to use it too :P ) I dont think I'll use it in the wheel wells, etc for this one. It's too tacky and I reckon dirt and crap will stick to it and stay wet = rust. Well that's how I see it

I'm interested to see whats out there too as I'll need it very soon... :)

EDIT: I was just looking at this stuff I bought for my subframe, I'm wondering how good it would be for the body...

"Septone Chassis Black is an anti-corrosive coating for the undercarriages of motor vehicles. It has a high opacity gloss black finish and the low viscosity of the product makes it ideal to apply with a brush"

...and it's mineral based.

Just a thought

When I did the 850 floor I used 2 pack tar epoxy. If it's good enough to protect steel boats from saltwater it's good enough for under a Mini. 8)
You can get it at Bias Boating Warehouse, or Whitworths.

first off i primed, then seam sealed, then used k&h underbody sound deadener/tar stuff

then primed, seam sealed and painted in 2k, the underbody is ment to be the same color as the body (thats how it was from factory, and looks better IMO)

I agree dove Grey looks great when the underneath matches the exterior, especially in the wheel wells. All the award winning concourse minis in the UK have nice glossy wheel arches and underneath. Looks sooo much better.
